This marks Madina's third scholarship opportunity, having previously studied at Kaya Tiwi High School on a full sports scholarship before attending Zetech University
After months of anxiety and setbacks, Kenya’s basketball prodigy, Madina Okot, has finally received the visa she needs to pursue her dreams in the United States.
Standing tall at 6-foot-six, Madina has overcome the hurdles that previously denied her entry into the U.S. despite securing a coveted spot on the Mississippi State Women’s Basketball team.
This marks Madina's third scholarship opportunity, having previously studied at Kaya Tiwi High School on a full sports scholarship before attending Zetech University, where she played for the Zetech Sparks in the women’s premier league, also on a full scholarship.
Reflecting on her journey, Madina expressed confidence in her ability to excel, despite the challenges she has faced. She first represented Kenya on the national stage during the 3x3 basketball event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK, where she stood out as the top performer in the Kenyan team. “I was a bit shaky at first, but I performed better than I expected. I was voted player of the match in my first game on that big stage, but I was too camera-shy to speak. It was very intimidating,” Madina recounted.
Madina’s visa approval marks a significant milestone in her journey. “I received great news today. I went to the U.S. embassy, and my visa was finally approved. I’m so happy; it hasn’t been easy, especially after being denied four times. I kept going, and I didn’t give up. Imagine being rejected four times and still finding the strength to try again. But finally, God did it for me,” said a jubilant Madina.
Michael Finley, the Kenya Country Lead for NBA Africa, commented on Madina’s new chapter, stating, “Madina must be prepared to compete against the best of the best. She will need to work harder than she ever has before. On the basketball court, she will face challenges like never before. But she’s capable, and they’ve seen it.”
Finley also emphasized the importance of Madina’s academic responsibilities, noting that she must excel in the classroom as well as on the court. Kita Matungulu, Director of Basketball for NBA Africa, echoed this sentiment, stating that Madina now has the chance to showcase Kenya’s basketball talent on the global stage, despite the visa challenges she has faced.
“We have to express our gratitude to the many stakeholders involved, particularly the U.S. government, for providing Madina and other young athletes the opportunity to play basketball and study in the USA. This is a significant moment for young Kenyans to shine at the next level,” Kita remarked.
