Liverpool who went for the international break with a magnificent 3-0 over arch rivals Manchester United went into the match as favorites having not lost at home to Nottingham Forest since 1969.
Colombian forward Luis Diaz had Liverpool's first significant opportunity, chasing down a loose ball and winning it high up the pitch before striking the post with a low shot. Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister also tested goalkeeper Matz Sels twice in the first half; one which was a header nearly resulted in a calamitous mistake as Sels initially fumbled the ball before almost backheeling it into his own net.
Despite dominating possession and territory throughout the second half, Liverpool struggled to break through Forest's defense. Coach Arne Slot made a surprising triple substitution taking off Argentinian Alexis Mac Allister, who was their stand out player in the match.
Nottingham Forest’s goal came in the 72nd minute when Callum Hudson-Odoi cut in from the left flank and curled a superb shot off the post to secure a 1-0 victory for the underdogs. Liverpool now has nine points in four games.
