AFC Leopards once again dropped points after conceding a late goal, as Sofapaka fought back to secure a 1–1 draw at the Dandora Stadium on Sunday evening.
Interim coach Fred Ambani made no changes to the starting lineup that secured victory in midweek, with youngster Kelly Madada making his second Premier League start.
Leopards started the match on a high, maintaining possession and dictating play. Their early pressure paid off in the 6th minute when Madada finished off a well-delivered cross from Sydney Lokale on the right, scoring his first-ever career goal for the club.
Few minutes later, Sofapaka nearly levelled the score as Jack Ong’aya headed in a corner, but Humphrey Katasi was quick to make a crucial save and deny him. In the 29th minute, Ochieng’ Ovella almost doubled the lead but his freekick hit the crossbar. Defender Kennedy Owino was quick to follow up the rebound but his header went wide.
Just before halftime, Ronald Ssempala had a golden opportunity to bring Sofapaka back into the game. He found himself one on one with Katasi but was denied by a timely intervention from Owino, who cleared the ball for a corner, ensuring AFC’s lead remained intact going into the break.
The second half saw AFC maintain their momentum, though Sofapaka pressed harder for an equalizer. In the 73rd minute, Leopards had another chance to extend their lead after a slick exchange between Ovella and Lokale, but Boniface Munyendo’s shot from the edge of the box struck the crossbar. In the 83rd minute, Sofapaka earned a corner and Edward Omondi took advantage of the opportunity, heading in the equalizer to level the score at 1–1. Despite late efforts from both teams, the match ended in a draw, with Leopards once again unable to hold onto their lead.
