KPA crowned Bitok International tourney champions

KPA crowned Bitok International tourney champions

The David Lung'aho-led warders came back for the third set guns blazing and went ahead 7-2 before KPA's bench could call for a timeout.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men's volleyball team has been crowned champions of the inaugural Bitok International tournament.

The semis played at Nyayo on Thursday 22 June pit the dockers against Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the former winning 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 16-25, 25-20 ).

Trailblazers on the other hand lost by straight-sets to former champions Prisons Kenya ( 25-19, 25-19, 27-25) in the other semi final to set up a final clash between Prisons and KPA.

In the absence of KPA Coach Sammy Mulinge, assistant coach James Ontere was in charge and delivered the trophy with his team also producing the tournament's most valuable player (MVP) in opposite attacker Peter Kamara.

KPA had a slow start in the match, trailing in the first set early on but recovered well to assume lead halfway through and hold on for a 25-21 win.

In the second set, Kelvin Kipkosgei's setting and Hudson Chesoli's leadership on the court especially when on attack propelled Prisons to a set of their own at 23-25 to level matters and make sure there would not be a straight-sets victory for either side.

The David Lung'aho-led warders came back for the third set guns blazing and went ahead 7-2 before KPA's bench could call for a timeout.

It was, however, KPA who set up an amazing comeback, going on a scoring rampage to level the score at ten and assume lead, frustrating any efforts by Lung'aho's men to go back at the helm.

Costly reception mistakes on the part of Prisons saw them to give points behind and never recovered as they went on to lose the set 25-21.

It was a similar script in the fourth set, KPA fighting to kill off the match while Lung'aho rallied his charges on in an attempt to force a decider set. That was never to be as the set ended 25-18 for KPA to win.

Dennis Omollo, who was captaining the team for the first time in the tournament was full of praise for his squad, saying that this is reward for hard work and an indication of better things to come.

"We came into this tournament confident of the title and this means a lot to me individually and as the captain of the team. This is a first of many titles for this team.

Additionally, it is a good precursor to the final level of the regular season where we are fighting for a playoff slot," Omollo said.
