Kipchumba Murkomen appointed new Sports CS

Murkomen assumes his role at a critical time, as Kenya is deeply engaged in sports activities, beginning with the Olympic Games in Paris.

Kenya’s President William Ruto has appointed Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen as the new Cabinet Secretary for Sports and Youth Affairs. Murkomen replaces Ababu Namwamba, who was dismissed along with the entire cabinet over two weeks ago following a series of protests in Kenya.

Murkomen assumes his role at a critical time, as Kenya is deeply engaged in sports activities, beginning with the Olympic Games in Paris.

The national Rugby Sevens team is set to compete against Argentina and Australia on Wednesday, followed by a match against Samoa on Thursday.

Additionally, the ministry faces the significant task of constructing and renovating stadiums nationwide in preparation for hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Murkomen is one of 11 Cabinet Secretaries appointed on Wednesday, adding to the previous 11 appointed a week earlier. The new appointees will await parliamentary approval before commencing their duties.
