Kibera are currently top of the league standings with 16 points, three top of second placed Bungoma Queens.
Kibera Soccer Women secured a 2 – 0 victory over Vihiga Queens, ending their unbeaten run in the FKF Women Premier League match on November 24th at Don Bosco grounds in Karen.
The win came courtesy of two second half goals from substitutes Anna Arusi and Lucky Achando, marking the first time Vihiga Queens has conceded a goal this season.
The first half was all for Vihiga Queens, as they dictated play, creating chances but failing to convert them. Just before halftime, Providence Khasiala had a chance to give the visitors the lead but Kibera Soccer goalkeeper Vivian Shiyonzo made a crucial save, sending the team into the break goalless.
At the break, Arusi was brought in to replace Stella Adhiambo in what was a tactical change in the midfield. The move paid off as Kibera began to take control of the match. In the 54th minute, Arusi rose to head in from a corner, with the ball being too heavy for Vihiga’s Ruth Aturo hands, as she put it into her own net.
Vihiga pushed for an equalizer but Kibera’s defence stood firm, with left back Pauline Ochieng’ being the standout player, blocking several goal attempts.
With just three minutes to time, Kibera doubled their lead. Maximilla Robi’s pass caught the Vihiga defense unaware, allowing Achando to sprint and slot it home.
Vihiga’s coach Bonface Nyamunyamu acknowledged his team’s lack of clinical finishing, saying, “We had many chances in the match, especially in the first half, but failed to put the ball into the net. It just wasn’t our day and they were the best in terms of using their chances. We attacked most of the match, and they used that to counter for the second goal. It’s our first loss, a tough one to take but we’ve to go back to the drawing board and come back stronger.”
Kibera shot stopper Vivian Shiyonzo was all praises for her coach after the match, stating, “ I really want to thank my coach for the mentorship. Last season when I was the goalkeeper with less clean sheets, instead of finding another shot stopper, he encouraged and motivated me to up my game. We can see the results and it’s paying off.”
When asked about the national team, Shiyonzo expressed her readiness for the task. “I’m always looking forward for the day I get the chance to represent my country. I know I can do it, and I will make my country proud if given the opportunity.”
Shiyonzo has now kept five clean sheets in six matches, with her only conceded match coming against Trinity Queens.
