Kenya handball team set for return after disastrous Cairo outing

Kenya handball men’s national team jets back into the country on Monday after failing to secure a single win at the Africa Cup of Nations-cum-Rio Olympics qualification tournament held in Cairo, Egypt from January 21-31.

The national outfit finished at the bottom of the tournament ranking in 12th spot.

The poor results registered in Cairo did not come as a surprise as the government-funded national team was assembled a day to their departure date (January 20) without being in- neither residential nor non-residential- camp.

Angola initiated the downfall of the Peter Mwathi-coached side with a 16-42 beating. Congo- Brazzaville then deepened Kenya’s wound with a 19- 34 thwarting before they were humbled by Tunisia 53-15.

It did not get better for the only East African team at the tourney when Libya downed them 22-30. Democratic Republic of Congo then finalized the team's poor outing with a 30-35 defeat in the last pool B match sending the latter home.
