Kenya’s U-17 women’s soccer team, the Junior Starlets, are set to depart for Spain on September 19 for a pre-tournament training camp ahead of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The Football Kenya Federation confirmed this, as the team wraps up their one-week training in Nairobi.
The Junior Starlets are in their final preparation phase for their historic debut at the World Cup, which will take place in the Dominican Republic. Drawn in a tough group, the team will face England, Korea DPR, and Mexico in the group stage.
Team captain Elizabeth Ochaka expressed the significance of the qualification for both the players and Kenyan football. “Qualifying for the World Cup is a massive achievement, especially as the first Kenyan team to do so. We don’t take this chance lightly. Our goal is to compete, not just participate,” Ochaka stated.
She also highlighted how the tournament could present life-changing opportunities for the players. “Playing at the World Cup opens doors for many of us to get scouted by international teams, which has always been a dream.”
