IAAF to set up High Performance Centre at Kenyatta University

IAAF will set up a High Performance Centre at Kenyatta University during the World U-18 Championships in Nairobi from July 11-16 next year .

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Local Organizing Committee confirmed Kenyatta University will be used to conduct seminars by IAAF as well as athletes’ village.

While saying that there was a lot to be done in preparation  for the event, LOC chief executive officer Mwangi Muthee said there should be no panic as the plans were going on well.

“There are proper plans for the event and a technical team is in place though there are lots of things to be done,”Muthee said.

IAAF recommended that the tartan track in the competition and warm up areas have not been constructed and with only ten months remaining, Kenya’s is behind the schedule owing to the density of works needed to be done.

“A new tartan track in accordance with the recommendation of the International Association of Athletics Federations is needed and the government is aware,” He said.

“The government has procedures when it comes to funding but we will stick to it since we want to do a good job,”Muthee added.

Athletics Kenya head of Youth Development Barnabas Korir said they have put in place structures to ensure that only eligible athletes compete in the championships.

He said they have data on all athletes in the secondary schools and the national trials for the event will be held in June next year.

Korir however said the camps scheduled for between December 2015 and April 2016 didn’t kick off due to financial challenges.

“But we managed to stage one at Keringet High School in August this year where 120 athletes took part,”Barnaba said.
