Despite securing second place in their opening race at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Team Kenya suffered heartbreak after being disqualified for what appeared to be a lane infringement.
Kenya had looked strong in Heat Two, finishing second with an African/National Record of 3:10.73 after a powerful final stretch by Mary Moraa, who received the baton from the impressive Allan Kipyego. The team had earlier started in lane five, with Brian Tinega handing over to Mercy Adongo before Moraa’s decisive run.
In the same heat, Team USA, Great Britain, and South Africa secured the automatic top three qualifying spots after Kenya’s disqualification.
