Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had hinted at Firat’s departure, following the team's poor AFCON qualification campaign.
Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat has announced his resignation following the failure to qualify the country for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) competition. In an interview with online publication, the Turkish coach who has been under intense pressure from fans and stakeholders confirmed that he had stepped down from his role and was awaiting an official announcement from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
“I have terminated my contract after this CS (Murkomen) talked so much about me, but let Football Kenya Federation (FKF) make the announcement,” Firat told was quoted on Wednesday.
During his tenure, Firat managed the Harambee Stars for 23 matches, securing seven wins, seven draws and nine defeats. Among his seven wins, only three were in competitive tournaments coming against Rwanda (2-1), Seychelles (5-0) and Namibia (2-1).
His resignation comes just days after the FKF elections where a new leadership headed by Hussein Mohammed and Macdonald Mariga, emerged victorious.
Earlier, Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had hinted at Firat’s departure, following the team's poor AFCON qualification campaign. Murkomen had also suggested that the ministry would cease funding Firat's payments.
