The result sees Kenya climb to third in the group standings with 12 points, leapfrogging both Burundi and The Gambia.
Kenya’s Harambee Stars picked up a crucial away win in their FIFA World Cup qualifier, edging Burundi 1–0 in Bujumbura on Thursday evening.
After a cagey first half that produced few clear chances, the match sparked to life in the second period when substitute Ryan Wesley Ogam was introduced in the 65th minute. The youngster wasted no time, striking just seven minutes later to hand Kenya the decisive goal in a tightly contested East African derby.
Despite playing with a numerical advantage for much of the match following a Burundi red card, the Stars found it difficult to break down their hosts. It took Ogam’s sharp finish to finally unlock the game and secure maximum points for coach Benni McCarthy’s men.
The result sees Kenya climb to third in the group standings with 12 points, leapfrogging both Burundi and The Gambia. However, the Harambee Stars remain out of contention for World Cup qualification. Their campaign will wrap up next Tuesday when they face group leaders Ivory Coast in Abidjan.
