Harambee Starlets have an uphill task in overturning the results in their favour and clinching a ticket to the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco.

This is after playing Botswana to a one-all draw in the first leg of the final leg of the round of qualifiers at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Starlets had a chance to head to Gaborone with at least with a slim win but Violet Nanjala will rue a last minute penalty that ended in the hands of Maitumelo Bosija.

Bosija was the difference between the two teams with her decent saves to deny the Kenyan girls who pushed hard to secure big advantage ahead of the return leg set for Tuesday next week.

Reacting to the penalty save and the general performance of the team, Bosija who skippered the visiting team revealed that the team had prepared for a draw in Nairobi and was glad they achieved their target.

"We really wanted the clean sheet and win by two or three goals but we take the draw. When Kenya won the penalty, I had to bail the team out," she said.

Starlets coach Beldine Odemba regretted that her girls ignored some instructions and paid for it at the end of it.

"Players missed some instructions as we had analysed them and picked out their strengths and weaknesses. They came for a draw and got it, "

Odemba however remained optimistic of getting positive results in the return leg.

"The tie is far from over. They were defensive in the first leg which means they will open up in the return game, making it easy for us to win," she said.
