Gor Mahia took center stage in the Kenyan Premier League on Saturday, February 1st, as they secured a dramatic 2-1 win over Posta Rangers in a thrilling KPL clash that capped an eventful day of football action.
The day kicked off with Kakamega Homeboyz aiming to bounce back from their controversial loss to Gor Mahia in their previous match, where a late offside call denied them an equalizer. Against Mara Sugar, they wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Moses Shumah opened the scoring with a penalty in the 7th minute, and Estone Esiye doubled the lead shortly after, sealing a 2-0 victory for Homeboyz.
Elsewhere, FC Talanta and Mathare United faced off in a tight battle for survival. After a quiet first half, Mathare United gifted Talanta the lead with an own goal in the 57th minute. However, Mathare responded swiftly, with Stephen Okola equalizing just five minutes later. Despite late efforts from both teams, the game ended 1-1, with both sides sharing the spoils.
The focus then shifted to the eagerly anticipated match between Gor Mahia and Posta Rangers. Gor Mahia, intent on continuing their push for retaining the league title, struggled to break down Posta in a goalless first half. However, they found their breakthrough in the 73rd minute when they finally broke the deadlock through after Gedeon Bendeka put in a rebound from a blocked shot by Sharrif Musa. Posta Rangers weren’t done yet, though, and leveled the score in the 85th minute.
As the game appeared to be heading for a draw, Gor Mahia had other plans. In a dramatic twist, deep into stoppage time, they found a late winner nine minutes into added time through defender Alphonse Omija, securing a 2-1 victory and reinforcing their dominance at the top of the league standings.
With just a few minutes to go, Posta Rangers goalkeeper Bixtonne Otieno had to be rushed to hospital after picking up a concussion injury, with K’Ogalo players visiting him late at night at a Buruburu facility. So far, it is reported that CT scans have not revealed anything of great concern and the goalkeeper might be discharged on Monday.
