Gor Mahia pay the penalty to Kariobangi Sharks
Gor Mahia’s woeful week continued as they were dumped out of the Football Kenya Federation Shield following a 4-2 post-match penalties loss to last year’s finalists Kariobangi Sharks in Machakos on Sunday.
Joachim Oluoch and Bernard Ondiek lost their penalties with Sharks scoring four of their five as they progressed to the final, quashing Gor Mahia’s dream of clinching a double this season.
Gor had a good start to the penalties with Fredrick Odhiambo saving his third penalty in four games, stopping Patillah Omotto’s kick. Francis Mustafa scored for Gor with Pascal Ogweno replying scoring Sharks’ second spot kick.
But the advantage was all gone when Ondiek sent his effort over the bar and from then on, Sharks never stopped with Bolton Omwenga and keeper Gad Mathews scoring while Joachim Oluoch hit the bar after Boniface Omondi had scored.
Duke Abuya stepped up for the decider and he didn’t’ make a mistake to send Sharks to their third consecutive semi final.
On the balance of chances created, Sharks should have at least been two up by half time. They had the first chance after 12 minutes, Omotto’s looped ball from midfield landing on Harrison Mwenda’s path but the winger volleyed the effort wide with a clean path to goal ahead of him.
Sharks thought they had broken the deadlock in the 27th minute when Eric Kapaito tapped the ball home from close range after George Abege’s knock down, but his goal was ruled out for offside.
Two minutes to the break, Kapaito saw his header go off the bar after nodding the ball beyond Fredrick Odhiambo in goal from an Abuya chip.
Sharks continued to dominate in the second half with ore chances as Gor looked disorganized, but they could not hit the target. Kerr made changes bringing on skipper Harun Shakava to stabilize the defense.
