Gor Mahia bounce back to winning ways with Zoo victory
Gor thrash Zoo in KPL
Gor Mahia put off the dark days of four matches without victory after beating Zoo Kericho 4-1 at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos in their penultimate game of the season on Thursday evening. Goals from Wesley Onguso, Jacques Tuyisenge, Wellington Ochieng and Bernard Ondiek saw Gor move to 75 points in the standings.
Gor got into a positive start with left back Onguso breaking the deadlock with a low shot from the edge of the area after 17 minutes. But scenes from last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Mathare United almost played back when Mike Madoya equalized for Zoo with a low finish inside the box after 33 minutes.
But, Gor ensured they didn’t make the same mistakes with two quickfire goals in the 35th and 39th minutes, first Tuyisenge calmly slotted the ball home off Francis Mustafa’s cross inside the box before Ochieng finished off Francis Kahata’s freekick heading into the net.
The recently crowned champions needed just three minutes in the second half to pull further away, Bernard Ondiek striking a sweet volley from a Tuyisenge assist.
Zoo had a chance to draw one back late on when Madoya was clipped inside the box by Joachim Oluoch, but the pint0sized attacking midfielder blasted his penalty wide.
The focus now shifts to Tusker FC on Sunday in Machakos and Gor will not only be looking to finish the season with a win but also aid Tuyisenge in fighting for the golden boot. The Rwandese went joint top with Kariobangi Sharks Eric Kapaito and former Nzoia man Elvis Rupia who both have 15.
Tuyisenge will be looking to score at least one against Tusker to move clear. Madoya would have also gone to 15 had he scored the penalty, but he remains second with 14 goals.
