Gor Mahia beat Vipers to book Kagame Cup semi ticket
Second half goals from Jacques Tuyisenge and new signing Francis Mustafa ensured Gor went through to the Semi finals of the CECAFA Kagame Cup
Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia booked a CECAFA Kagame Cup Semi final slot after coming from behind to beat Uganda’s Vipers in Tanzania on Sunday.
Second half goals from Jacques Tuyisenge and new signing Francis Mustafa ensured Gor went through to the last four where they will meet the winner between Rayon Sport and Azam who play on Monday.
Gor were stunned early in the game with Taddeo Lwanga’s wonder strike from range catching keeper Boniface Oluoch off his feet to give the Ugandan champions the lead. Gor had chances to get back in the game with Mustafa squandering two opportunities one on one with the keeper.
Dylan Kerr was forced into a change three minutes to half time when defensive midfielder Ernest Wendo had to limp off and was replaced by Francis Kahata. Kahata had been left out of the team when they played their final group match as the tactician said he was unsettled with news of a move to Simba.
With the change, Philemon Otieno was left as the only defensive shield in midfield with Kahata taking on his creative role.
In the second half, Gor came back better and just two minutes in, Jacques Tuyisenge brought them back on level terms when he deflected a Mustafa shot past the Vipers keeper.
Mustafa thought he had given his side the lead after 64 minutes, but his goal was ruled out for offside. However, he made amends for his earlier misses in the 73rd minute when he pounced on the ball after the Vipers keeper had spilled Tuyisenge’s shot and slapped home the winner.
Meanwhile in the other quarter final, Tanzanian champions Simba SC progressed to the last four after beating Djibouti’s Ports by a solitary goal.
