Gor Mahia beat Nzoia Sugar to extend unbeaten run
Before the line-ups were out, the match between Gor Mahia and Nzoia Sugar would have been billed as a David versus Goliath affair based of the team’s extreme fortunes in the league so far ad Gor Mahia leads while Nzoia Sugar are at the tail end.
Coach Dylan Kerr’s move to rest most players who started against Esperance in a midweek Champion League clash and start with a makeshift side gave Nzoia Sugar a fighting chance albeit on paper.
However, Gor Mahia despite lacking the usual fluidity outsmarted their rivals to emerge victorious and extend their unbeaten run.
Kevin Omondi ,who was Gor Mahia’s captain for the day settled the tie at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos with a cool finish coming off a Boniface Omondi cross three minutes to the break.
Some moments of brilliance from Eliud Guikan were thwarted by Nzoia keeper in the opening minutes. Guikan had another chance in the second half but his effort aimed at an empty net after rounding Nzoia keeper was cleared off the line.
Nzoia too had their moments with David Odhiambo running rings around the Gor defence. In one of moves he fed Rubia but the latter directed the shot towards Gor Mahia’s keeper. Wakanya’s freekick was well executed but Odhoji stood strong for Gor Mahia to deny Nzoia.
Late in the second half, Gor Mahia had a chance to double the lead but Wesley Onguso’s retaken penalty was saved.
Bandari 3-0 Sony Sugar
In Mombasa, Bandari had a Ugandan forward William Wadri and David King'atua to thank for their 3-0 win over the Sony Sugar. Wadri scored a brace to help his side erase last games memories where they lost to Gor Mahia.
