Gor Mahia beat Leones Vegetarianos in first leg

Gor Mahia are one leg into the first round of the CAF Champions League after a deserved 2-0 win over Leones Vegetarianos of Equatorial Guinea at a packed Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Saturday afternoon.

During the match, the KPL champions firing cylinders were active from the kick off. Meddie Kagere had the first shot on target in the fifth minute while Kevin Omondi had a chance with only the keeper to beat in the 10th minute but he was ruled offside.

Playmaker Francis Kahata then curled a nice free kick that was cleared on the line.

Kevin Omondi broke the deadlock in the 20th minute following a nice assist from Kahata.

Gor Mahia had a chance to double the lead via a penalty following a hard ball  but Humprey Mieno’s feeble spot kick was saved by the keeper.

Gor Mahia led by the solitary goal at the breather.

It was a similar script in the second half as Gor Mahia began on a high with their opponent left to defend chase the ball.

At the one hour mark, George Blackberry Odhiambo was rested and in his place came in Ephrem Guikan. The Ivorian's beat the defense and found space to shoot with his first touch to double  the lead.

Gor Mahia now need to avoid defeat in Equatorial Guinea in the return leg tie in a fortnight to face the winner between ASAC Concorde of Mauritania and Tunisia’s Esperance. A win in the first round will land them in the lucrative group stages.
