High riding Catalan side Girona FC made maximum use of home ground advantage to thrash struggling Deportivo la Coruna 2-0 in a Spanish La Liga match played on Friday at Estadi Municipal de Montilivi.

Cristian Stuani broke the deadlock in the 21st minute while Juanpe sealed the  points in the 57th minute. The win propellled Girona FC to 6th spot in the La Liga table, a Europa  League qualified team position.

Kenyan striker Micheal Olunga was again missing on the line-up. Olunga, who is expected to link up with Harambee Stars for two friendlies in Morocco alongside MacDonald Mariga and Ismail Gonzalel also based in Spain, last featured for Girona in 1-0 Loss to Sevilla on 11th February.

Prior to the game, pundit Adam Selby from Girona UK  argued that Girona coach  Pablo Machin should not over rely on same starting eleven but give the likes of Olunga a chance to prove themselves but that was to be based on the coach's thirst for Europa League qualification.

“Choosing not to rest the likes of Stuani, Portu and Maffeo may be a real indication of just how much both Machín and Girona as a club crave European Football,” Selby said.

“Should they choose to rest the deadly attacking duo of Stuani and Portu who between themselves have arguably singlehandedly guided Girona to safety, tonight’s match offers a perfect opportunity for the likes of Michael Olunga and Douglas Luiz to step up and prove their worth.

“Olunga, who gave us a wonderful glimpse of just what he is capable of with a quick-fire hat trick earlier this year against Las Palmas may suit a game played at the pace of what tonight could ensue. A powerful player capable of holding up the ball, Olunga offers something completely different to any other forward at the club and with another impressive performance he would surely all but guarantee his permanent future at Girona,” Selby added.
