They had lost two crucial points in their mid-week clash against Ulinzi Starlets after a one-all draw; a result that saw their title-hunt dealt a blow as they needed to win to reclaim top place.

Kenya Women’s Premier League (WPL) side Gaspo Women's decision to withdraw from their season finale against champions Vihiga Queens has been heavily criticized as unsportsman-like.

The James Ombeng'-coached side released a statement on social media stating that they would not be honoring the match, despite being the hosts.

“We as Gaspo Women football club, have decided not to participate in #FKFWPL final match against Vihiga Queens FC scheduled on Sunday, 28th May 2023.

This decision has come to be considered due to a number of reasons. We therefore will give out a walkover to the above-mentioned opponents.” the statement reads.

While the club management remains tight-lipped on the reasons for such a move, many speculate that the decision has been reached out of spite following their recent performance that saw them hand the title to the defending champions on a silver platter.

Up until this weekend, the side that had on 3 April announced that former Harambee Stars coach Jacob 'ghost' Mulee would be leading their charge for the WPL title, were still in running for their maiden gong.

They had lost two crucial points in their mid-week clash against Ulinzi Starlets after a one-all draw; a result that saw their title-hunt dealt a blow as they needed to win to reclaim top place.

When they faced off with Wadadia FC on the weekend, they were still in the race, despite Vihiga Queens' advantage.

However, the race was over when they (Gaspo) were held to a two-all draw by Wadadia while Vihiga picked a 2-1 win over Nakuru Queens to accumulate an unassailable 52 points with one match left.

Gaspo would have been expected to give Vihiga Queens a guard of honour before the season finale that was slated for GEMS Cambridge this weekend.

Gaspo might face  sanctions from the federation which might include a points deduction for a walk over a similar punishment meted on Trans Nzoia Falcons Kangemi Ladies, Zetech Sparks, and Kayole Starlets. The point deduction will see  Kangemi Starlets and Kangemi Ladies conclude the league  on negative points
