Gallant Kenya finishes second in Vancouver 7s
A determined Kenya7s fell at the last hurdle to finish second in the Vancouver leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens at the BC Place Stadium. From their efforts, Coach Innocent Simiyu’s gallant boys picked 19 points from Canada to push their tally total to 64 and cement position 8.
Kenya beat England 12-0 to make it to the semifinal where they were pitted against USA.
During the semifinal, USA had the best of starts with Terry Baker who is enjoying in sensational form handing them two quick tries and successful conversions for a 14-0 lead in the fourth minute.
Kenya replied through Nick Oyoo who made two tries in succession to reduce the gap to 14-12. First Oyoo outwitted Danny Barrett then was at the right place to receive the ball from Injera before sprinting for the second try.
Injera then connected with Ambaka who scored the next try to make the score line 19-19 with 26 seconds left to play.
It was then Ouma's turn to cap it with a final try that handed Kenya 24-19 victory. Collins Injera made an intervention then gave ball to Agero who passed to Ouma and the latter dashed forward to hand Kenya a 24-19 victory.
This was the first time Kenya had reached the Cup final since 2016.
FINAL: Kenya 12-31 Fiji
In the final, Kenya started off well with Willy Ambaka creating time and space to surge over the line for a try. Samuel Oliech added the conversion for Kenya’s 7-0 lead.Fiji responded almost instantly through Josua Vakurunabili's try and Vatemo Ravouvou conversion to even the proceedings.
Samuel Oliech then made another try but failed in conversion for what would be Kenya's last efoort but Fiji would answer that in similar fashion through Sevuloni Mocenacagi for a 12-12 tie at the break.
The second half was a case of things fall apart for Kenya as Fiji scored 19 unanswered points to pull away with 31-12 victory.
Despite the loss in the final, Kenya 7s produced an electrifying performance in the Vancouver leg that they should carry over to the Hong Kong leg.
