Kimanzi will now focus on strengthening the federation’s structures, nurturing local talent and fostering the growth of football from the grassroots to the national level.
In a move set to reshape Kenyan football, Francis Kimanzi has been appointed as the Football Kenya Federation’s (FKF) Football Development Director. The announcement was made on March 13, 2025, by FKF CEO Harold Ndege, who expressed strong confidence that Kimanzi’s experience and leadership would be key in driving the federation’s ambitious development agenda for the sport.
Kimanzi, a well known figure in Kenyan football, brings with him decades of experience both as a player and coach. His playing career began in 1994 with Mathare United, where he spent nearly a decade. After hanging up his boots, Kimanzi transitioned into coaching, taking the helm at clubs like Sofapaka, Tusker FC and Wazito FC. He also served multiple stints as the head coach of the national team, Harambee Stars. His first tenure in 2008-2009 was particularly notable, as he led the team to the final round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and achieved a historic 68th place in the FIFA world rankings.
Before stepping into his new administrative role, Kimanzi has been serving as the interim head coach of Harambee Stars since December 2024. Under his guidance, the team participated in the Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar, securing a victory over Tanzania Mainland and a draw with Burkina Faso.
As the Football Development Director, Kimanzi will now focus on strengthening the federation’s structures, nurturing local talent and fostering the growth of football from the grassroots to the national level. His deep understanding of the local football scene, coupled with his extensive coaching experience, makes him an Ideal candidate for this critical position.
Kimanzi’s appointment is seen as a major step forward for Kenyan football, with many hopeful that his leadership will help the sport flourish in the country. His experience both on the field and from the sidelines will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the future of football in Kenya.
