While the club has yet to release an official statement, it is widely believed that irreconcilable differences and disappointing results led to his exit.
In a surprising turn of events, Tanzanian Premier League side Fountain Gate FC has parted ways with Kenyan coach Robert Matano, just three months after his appointment, as reports suggest.
Matano ‘The Lion’, widely regarded as one of East Africa’s most accomplished football managers, took over at Fountain Gate on January 10, 2025, following the dismissal of Mohamed Muya. The lion, known for his success with Kenyan clubs like Sofapaka and Tusker FC, was seen as the ideal candidate to bring stability and success to a team struggling in the Tanzanian Mainland Premier League, overlooking joining Kenya Police FC for the club.
However, Matano’s time at Fountain Gate was fraught with challenges. Reports suggest that tensions between the coach, players and the club’s management played a key role in his departure. Sources indicate that disagreements over strategy and team management created friction, undermining Matano’s efforts to implement his tactical vision. Despite calls for patience and time to adjust, the team’s performance on the pitch did not improve, leaving Fountain Gate in the mid table with defensive issues that the coach struggled to resolve.
By late March 2025, Fountain Gate had conceded 40 goals in 23 matches, sharing the league’s worst defensive record with KenGold. While Matano expressed satisfaction with the team's attacking and midfield play, the defensive frailties remained a major concern. His tenure began with a 1-1 draw against league leaders Simba SC in February, but subsequent matches failed to produce significant improvements.
The decision to part ways with Matano was confirmed on April 5, 2025, by various reports within the football community. While the club has yet to release an official statement, it is widely believed that irreconcilable differences and disappointing results led to his exit. Former Mwadui FC coach Khalid Adam "Kibonge," has reportedly stepped in as interim coach, with hopes of stabilizing the team.
