The University of Eldoret has announced the nomination of multiple Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon to receive an Honorary Doctorate of Education from the institution. In a statement released to the public, the university announced that the honorary degree will be awarded to Kipyegon during the university’s 13th graduation on November 21st, 2024.
“Kipyegon is an accomplished middle and long-distance runner and is the reigning 1,500-meter and mile world record holder. Her most notable feat was becoming the first athlete to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 1,500 meters,” the statement read.
2024 has been an exceptional year for Kipyegon, who won gold medal in the 1500m at the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the first athlete to win three consecutive gold medals in the event and setting a new Olympic record of 3:51:29. She also won a silver medal in the 5000m race, this was a controversial race that saw Kipyegon initially disqualified before her win being reinstatement.
Additionally, Kipyegon triumphed in the Diamond League 2024 series, finishing first at the meetings in Paris, Rome and Brussels. At her season finale during the ATHLOS women only challenge in USA, she dazzled the field with her electrifying performance. Remarkably, she has not lost a single race in 1500m since 2021.
Her achievements this year has also led to her being nominated for the prestigious World Athlete of the Year 2024 award.
