The Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) women's league has been like Nairobi Water Queens' 'birth right' since 2013 and the side look set to continue their dominance.
On Sunday 2 April as the 2022 league came to a conclusion, the Jack Ochieng-coached team picked their 22nd win of the season to bag another title, unbeaten.
The 33-18 win over rivals National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), while missing the services of key players in skipper Gladys Chilo and Michelle Oyoo who are out injured pointed to a side that is highly unlikely to be defeated any soon.
"I am relying solely on experience in the league and that has won us the nine titles consecutively. However, there is pressure to look into bringing in young players to take care of the team's transition.
The core of the current squad joined almost at the same time and those that have come in much later, while good, cannot deliver on their own. There is pressure on my side to have new players. We have not recruited in a long time and hopefully we can do that soon," coach Ochieng offered.
The tactician believes their dominance will be put to the test soon as the other teams are rapidly improving.
Ulinzi Sharks, who finished second on the log on 48 points have brought the much-needed resistance for Queens but are yet to beat the holders.
"There is now some type of pressure that comes when we play a team like Ulinzi but it is good pressure. It keeps me on toes as a coach and challenges the entire squad to be at our best, which is something we have not had for a while.
If the other teams keep up the current trend, then the league gets better," the tactician added.
Under coach Emmanuel Kieti, Ulinzi have unsuccessfully attemted to beat the defending champions in the last three season but the coach believes they are getting there.
"Previously, we have been losing to them (Water) by a huge margin but this and last season have been better.
Their experience always comes into play whenever we meet but I believe in the new season, Water during the Super Cup or in the league, I am confident we will finally get our win," Kieti offered jn a previous interview.
Meanwhile, Kimilili-based Rangers Women have come up as the surprise package this season with stellar performances, including a win against second-placed Ulinzi to finish fourth and book a maiden Super Cup slot.
The Gerald Juma-coached side has one of the youngest squads in the league, baring Rising Stars who are a school-based team, and are likely to cause some upsets if they can maintain the same squad in the coming season.
