Under the tutelage of experienced tactician Peter Mwathi, new kids on the Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) men’s league block, Equity Handball Club have set what looks like a lofty target on their debut season.
However, Mwathi has assembled a formidable side with some of the best talents he has nurtured at his former work place, Strathmore University, and a few additional players who have proven themselves in the league, and a top-four target is not far-fetched.
“I know that the players I have are talented and have what it takes to compete against the best in the league but being a new side, we have set fourth-place as it gives us time to gel and build a working system while giving the title contender a run for their money,” Mwathi said.
The tactician said that his first point of action after assembling the team has been building the players’ mentality to one of a semi-pro athlete as most are just from school where the sport was not a priority.
He further adds that more emphasis has been put on the team’s strength and conditioning as that is a crucial part of the players’ transformation.
“We did not expect to face title contender like Black Mamba and of course Strathmore this early in the league but those two fixtures last weekend were a real test to what we have been doing so far and I can confidently say our training is working. We still have work to do but we are on the right track,” Mwathi added.
After a four-match unbeaten run, the bankers are fourth on the log behind leaders AND Super Cup champions Ulinzi HC and General Service Unit (GSU) who have played five matches and are separated by goal difference.
League winners National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), who have played four, are third on the log with a superior goal difference to the bankers’. Engineers HC complete the top five places with four wins from seven matches.
