Equity Hawks and Equity Dumas were crowned the women’s and men’s 2024 Sterling Basketball Super Cup Champions on Sunday 12th, 2024 night at Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium.
In the ladies’ final, runners up Zetech Sparks have themselves to blame considering they had control throughout the game but ultimately lost in the final minutes. Sparks started the final in a high note, dominating the play and by the time the clock hit the 6th minute, they were leading with 11 – 4.
Sparks continued their dominance although with Mitchell Sokoudjou showcasing her skills effortlessly, sinking two- and three- pointers while Hawks struggled to find their rhythm. Jemimah Night tried her best to inject energy to her Hawks side by scoring crucial solo goals to try and narrow the gap.
In the second and third quarter, Hawks had many opportunities to even the score by means of free throws but they kept on missing. By the start of the fourth quarter, they had lost a total of eleven free throws while their opponents had lost only two.
The final quarter was all for Zetech Sparks to seal the win but the momentum shifted dramatically. Hawks started to dominate the game and managed to narrow the score from 32 – 20 to 34 – 33. They eventually got their first lead of the game seconds later through a stunning two- pointer by Elizabeth Okumu.
The Hawks extended their lead to 43 – 35 but Sparks were not going to let the title go that easily. They fought hard and managed to bring the score to 43 – 41 with Naomi Bosibori scoring two three-pointers. In the closing seconds of the game, Sparks had a chance to take the title home but Britney Nafula missed four consecutive free throws at a go, allowing Equity Hawks to claim the title.
In the men’s final, Equity Dumas triumphed over Ulinzi Warriors. Dumas had early on beaten Strathmore 42 – 40 in a highly contested semifinal while Ulinzi Warriors came from behind to beat Zetech Titans 46 – 43 to reach the finals.
