Some of the changes effected at the training camp include a gym, hostels, cafeteria, VIP rooms and the training grounds that will undergo a complete facelift.
Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba has announced that the Chemoge High Altitude Training Centre in Bungoma County will be equipped and upgraded to a national training center.
The Centre is among projects initiated between 2013 and 2017 under Governor Ken Lusaka's first tenure and now will be able to serve more athletes in search of a high altitude training centre.
Ababu was speaking at Banantega in Mt Elgon where, according to The Star, he said the facility would be strategic with a capacity to cater to local and national athletes.
"We are upgrading it to a fully-fledged Satellite Academy under the Kenya Academy of Sports," he wrote on his socials on the same day he visited the facility
This, according to the CS, is part of the ministry's plan to ensure more sports facilities across the country to ease congestion on the ones that already exist.
Some of the changes effected at the training camp include a gym, hostels, cafeteria, VIP rooms and the training grounds that will undergo a complete facelift.
This is welcome news to the athletes from the area who have been forced to migrate to areas like Kapsabet in Nandi County, Iten and Kaptagat in Elgeyo Marakwet among other areas.
Being the only facility in the larger Western region of it's calibre, it is expected to be popular among athletes while also attracting those on the Ugandan side of the border.
