The Atlas Lions of Morocco came from a goal down to defeat Madagascar 3–2, securing a historic third CHAN trophy in the 2024 final at the Moi International Sports Complex, Kasarani, on Saturday night.

Morocco started brightly and almost struck early when Khalid Baba’s through ball released Oussama Lamlioui, but the forward dragged his effort narrowly wide. The Atlas Lions dominated possession, yet Madagascar’s defense, marshalled by Hajatiana Ratsimbazafy and captain Nantenaina Elysee, held firm.

Against the run of play, Madagascar stunned the crowd in the 8th minute. A quick counter from a corner found Clavin Felicite, who unleashed a thunderous strike from distance to give the islanders a shock lead with their first attempt on goal.

Morocco pushed forward in response. Mohammed Boulacsout went close in the 19th minute, but his shot flew just over the bar. Persistence finally paid off in the 26th minute when Youssef Mehri rose highest to head home Boulacsout’s cross, sending the stadium into celebrations.

Ten minutes later, Morocco almost went ahead after Madagascar goalkeeper Ramandimbisoa Michel ‘Toldo’ miscleared straight to an opponent, but the effort went wide. Just before halftime, Lamlioui finally found the net, finishing off a low cross from the right. A brief VAR check confirmed the goal, giving Morocco a 2–1 lead at the break.

The Atlas Lions returned energized after halftime. Lamlioui nearly extended the lead in the 48th minute, but his close-range shot drifted wide. Madagascar, however, refused to fold. Substitute Toky Rakotondraibe made an immediate impact in the 68th minute, controlling superbly under pressure and slotting home his third goal of the tournament to level the score at 2–2.

Morocco’s coach Tarek Sektioui responded with tactical changes in the 75th minute, bringing on Khalid Ait and Salah Eddine. The move paid off instantly. Just a minute later, Lamlioui struck again, catching Toldo off his line with a stunning long-range effort from near the halfway line. The goal sealed both his brace and his tally of six goals for the tournament.

Madagascar pressed hard for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Morocco’s defense stood resolute, seeing out the win and etching their name into CHAN history.
