The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has confirmed that its Executive Director, Auka John Gecheo, has been suspended from his role following a decision by the Executive Committee.

In a statement released on Monday, September 22, 2025, CECAFA announced:

“The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) wishes to inform stakeholders that, following an Executive Committee meeting Chaired by the Acting President, Mr. Alexandre Muyenge, and held via Zoom on September 18th, 2025, it was resolved to suspend Mr. Auka John Gecheo in the role of Executive Director of CECAFA.”

The decision comes after a consultative meeting of CECAFA Presidents, which was attended by representatives from seven member associations: Burundi, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Somalia.

The press release emphasized the organization’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stating:

“CECAFA reaffirms its commitment to upholding the values of the organization and will provide further communication on the matter in the coming weeks.”

The suspension of Gecheo marks a significant leadership shake-up at the regional body, with stakeholders now awaiting further clarity on the reasons behind the decision and the next steps for CECAFA’s administration.
