Can Kenyan golfers better Okello’s 1998 Performance?

Golf Park’s Jacob Okello  came closest to winning the Kenya Open in 1998 before losing on sudden death in the play-offs, since then no Kenyan has ever come close to equaling or bettering  his performance in the Kenya open golf championships.

In the 44th edition of the Barclays Kenya open championships last year Kenya was represented by 22 professionals and six amateurs with 156 participants registering for the event with a total of 26 countries represented.

Golfers Dismas Indiza and Brian Njoroge kept Kenya’s title hopes alive although they could not end the long drought for a Kenyan win. Indiza and Njoroge finished as the highest ranked in joint 22nd with a total of two under 282 for the tournament.

Open Golf Limited, KOGL, Sponsorship Director Dr. Samson Ndegwa said there is need to start incentives  to encourage professionals and amateurs if we are to motivate them in  the sport

“In last year’s edition, six local pros made the cut as compared to four the year before which marked an improvement. We are hoping for a better result this year.” Ndegwa observed.

“Kenya Open Golf Limited will be involved in sponsoring them to European and Sunshine Tour events. This way they will get exposure and be able to compete favorably with other golfers.” Ndegwa concluded.

Kenya Open Golf Championship  Barclays Kenya Open will be held from 13th – 17th February 2013 at the Karen Golf & Country Club.
