Malkia Strikers’ coach Paul Bitok whose three-day international tournament was cut short following the demise of Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) boss Waithaka Kioni on Sunday 9 April says the event will continue at a later date.
The tournament was in its final day on Sunday with the men and women’s categories scheduled to play in the semis in the morning with the climax, the finals that were set to be staged at Kasarani Indoor Arena.
“We will find an appropriate time to conclude the tournament after we are done laying our chairman respectfully to rest. After the order of events has been revealed for the burial and a road map for resumption of volleyball activities has been provided, then we can request to have a day slotted for the semis and final,” Bitok said.
The women’s category had league champions Kenya Pipeline preparing to take on archrivals Prisons Kenya while KCB play Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Prisons men are to take on Trailblazers while Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) play Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
“The tournament was scheduled to pave the way for another leg of the women’s league this weekend and the men’s league for next weekend but the former has effectively been postponed with the suspension of all KVF activities.
If the chance presents itself to have the leagues played, we will hope to complete the tournament then as it provides teams preparing for the club championships more matches to get ready,” Bitok further offered.
The men’s club event has been scheduled for 9 to 22 May while the women are set to get down to business from 13 to 26 the same month in Tunisia. Kenya is set to be represented by Pipeline, KCB and Prisons for the women’s category while General Service Unit (GSU), KPA and Trailblazers represent the men.
