Bakhiet on the double as Sudan hit Kenya in Khartoum
Kenya’s hope of making it into the Under-23 African Cup of Nations in Egypt later in the year were dampened after losing 2-0 to hosts Sudan in the first leg of the penultimate qualification round in Khartoum on Wednesday.
Waleed Bakhiet who has been in sizzling form for his club Al Hilal in the CAF Confederations Cup scored both goals as the Sudanese took a huge advantage to qualify for the next round. The winner of this two-legged tie will meet the winner between Libya and Nigeria in the final qualifying round.
To give themselves a chance, the Kenyan side coached by Francis Kimanzi will need to win by three clear goals to advance. A 2-0 win will send the game to penalties.
The final AFCON U23 tournament will be used as a qualification tournament for the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year.
The team jets back to the country Thursday afternoon to prepare for the second leg to be played in Nairobi next Tuesday.
