Akida's PAOK hit Swansea to advance in UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying

Akida signed an initial one and a half year deal with PAOK in June last year. She extended that deal in July this year to see her through the 2022/23 season.

Harambee Starlets forward Esse Akida was on the winning side as her Greek club side PAOK Thessaloniki defeated Welsh side Swansea 2-0 in UEFA Women’s Champions League round one action at the Katerini Stadium on Thursday 18 August 2022.

American forward Eva Vasiliki Vlassopoulos scored a brace, finding the back of the net in the 16th and 70th minutes to score the win in a match that saw Akida missing a goal scoring opportunity deep into injury time.

PAOK will now face Scotland’s Rangers on Sunday, with the victors progressing to a two-legged final round of qualifying for this season’s tournament.

Akida signed an initial one and a half year deal with PAOK in June last year. She extended that deal in July this year to see her through the 2022/23 season.

She was was part of the Thika Queens squad that won the 2020/21 FKF Women's Premier League and returned to Europe where she previously played for Turkish giants Besiktas. Her stint in Turkey was however cut short by th COVID-19 pandemic.

She was part of the Harambee Starlets squad that debuted on the continental scene at the 2016 Africa Women's Cup of Nations and has also played for Israeli side FC Ramat Hasharon and Kenya Methodist University where she joined from MTG.
