In the ongoing case, Tirop’s husband Ibrahim Rotich is still in police custody but continues to deny any involvement in the murder.
It is all systems go for the Inaugural Agnes Tirop memorial race to be held on Sunday 5th March at the Koitalel Samoei University in Nandi County.
The race has attracted hundreds of participants who will take part in the 10km race as well as the 42km cycling for both men and women, as organizers and family of the late Tirop celebrate the life of a former champion whose life was tragically cut short in a brutal murder.
Tirop’s lifeless body was found at her Iten home on October 13, 2021 just weeks after her return from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games where she had represented Kenya and finished 4th in the women’s 5000m.

The ever-rising star Agnes Tirop stormed to victory during the 2015 World Cross Country championships in Guiyang, China and was primed to be among the best of Kenya’s finest long distance runners.
Earlier in the week, Adidas vice-president for global sports marketing led a team of officials from Adidas in planting trees in honor of the fallen champion at their Kapnyamiso home in Mosoriot, Nandi County, while calling for more voices against gender based violence that led to Tirop’s murder.
The race on Sunday is expected to coincide with the international women’s day that is celebrated every 8th of March.
According to event chairperson Viola Jeptoo, “The races include the 42km cycling for both and women 10km men and women, 3km Corporate Run then 1km for kids as well as 3km Women only race,” she said.
“As a family, we want to honour the great athlete in this race. We are hosting the Agnes Tirop Memorial on Sunday where there will be so many sporting activities,” she added.
Jeptoo confirmed that all races will be competed along Kabiyet road and end at Samoe University with cycling starting from the university all the way to Kabiyet and back.
