Kenya’s golden queen of track, Faith Kipyegon, stormed into victory and extended her winning streak on Saturday night after winning the 1500 meters race in the Diamond League series finale in Brussels. This was the meeting record and her fifth title win in the Diamond League race series.
The 30-year-old world and Olympic champion powered into victory in a meeting record time of 3 minutes 54.75 seconds, narrowly defeating Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji, who took second place with a time of 3:55.25 in an exhilarating head-to-head battle between the two athletes.
Australia’s Olympic silver medalist Jessica Hull made it into the podium with a third-place finish.
Running a tactical race, Kipyegon came from behind the pack to secure the win in the final lap with Welteji having been on the lead throughout the race. Notably, Kipyegon has not lost a race in the 1500 meters since 2021 while also being the world record holder of the race and three-time Olympic champion. She is also the reigning champion having won the race in Paris earlier this year.
"My goal was to wrap up my Diamond League season on a high note, and I achieved that," Kipyegon said. "It was a strong race, but certainly not an easy one. I started the season later than planned due to a minor issue, but now I feel strong."
After her win, Kipyegon celebrated by raising five fingers, symbolizing her remarkable success in the Diamond League series.
