Matuga Girls from Kwale County are looking forward to pull surprises as the national secondary school game set kick off in Nakuru from June 17.

The team has not been moved even with the prospect of meeting bigwigs Kerugoya, Kapkolei and Sinyolo in the same pool. The players celebrated after beating St John’s Girls 4-0 in Mombasa region schools hockey final at Voi Secondary school early this month but will have to work harder in the nationals.

The girls from Kwale are making a comeback at the national scene after a three-year absence. The Newly-crowned Mombasa region secondary schools girls’ hockey champions have promised to give their all in the one week championships.

According to the draw released by Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association National Vice-chairman Rodgers Siasa Mwafungo, Matuga faces East Africa schools’ defending champions Kerugoya Girls from Abadare region, Sinyolo from Lake Region and national champions Kapkoilei from Nakuru.

Pool ‘B’ has Afraha Girls from Nakuru region, Gategi from Northern, St Cecilia Misikhu from Nzoia and St Joseph Kibwezi from Metropolitan region.

“Many thought that it was going to be a walk in the park for St.John who had seriously invested in their team and had even defeated Matuga in a previous organized tournament but they did not see the drubbing coming their way. I have faith the ladies will shock many teams.’ noted Moses Otieno one of Matuga’s technical team member.
