Handball; Nairobi Water sinks Cereals to charge into finals

Nairobi Water Handball Club on Friday afternoon beat Defending Champions National Cereals Board of Kenya 16-15 in a tense match at the Nyayo Handball Court to qualify for the finals of the East and Central African Handball Championships.  This is the first time Nairobi Water is in the finals of the regional tournament after missing out last year.

Coach Jack Ochieng was delighted with the win stating that it was a long time coming, “They had beaten us for long and we had to take it this time.  We are now focusing on the finals which we as well expect to be tough.”

In the first 5 minutes of the match the Water Queens had a 3 goal advantage against Cereals 1 goal, but the Champs managed to rally back and even the scores at 4-4 by the 8th minute. The two teams went head to head most of the time in the 1st half which ended 7-6 in favor of Cereals.

Alexina Ambani was a constant threat to the Water defence and her form saw her contribute to 5 of Cereals’ goals. Winger Brenda Arividsa gave the opponents 5 goals while Anne Mutua who was on exemplary form  in the match had 3 goals to ensure that Water meets either Heritage Club from DRC Congo or AS Police from Congo but the odds are against AS Police as Heritage have won all their matches including beating Water since the tournament started.

In another match played at the same venue University of Nairobi beat fellow students Strathmore University 23-22 to book a semi-final spot against Defending Champions Cereals (men).
