A sparkling Nyanza province on Saturday afternoon thrashed the defending champions Nairobi province 3-2 to clinch this year’s copa coca cola trophy at the City stadium in Nairobi.
Nairobi who started the game on a high note found themselves on the receiving end when the wonder boy John Olande turned the game around in the midfield with his swift moves which have acquired him the name little messi.Olande the darling of the mammoth crowd marshaled the Nyanza midfield to feed an equally lethal golden boy Timothy Otieno in the striking force.

After a barren first half Nyanza came into the second half with clean intent of clinching the elusive title. Timothy Otieno scored a hat trick to send the Nyanza camp into an early celebration. With three goals up Nyanza took to soccer aesthetism with their wonder boy John Olande keeping the fans on their feet with his super foot works.

Nairobi however registered a technical comeback when Nyanza defender was red carded after a second booking for foul character. A technical mix up and poor reaction to the red card by the lake’s boys led to Nairobi’s two quick last minute goals from Kevin Waweru and the sensational Harrison Mwendwa. The home lads almost pulled a surprise draw when their would be equalizer was cleared from the goal line by the impressive Nyanza defender Stephen Odhiambo.

At the end of the game the lakeside boys pocketed a whooping half a million shillings cash prize with only two places in the copa coca cola dream team.

City stadium was filled to capacity with majority of fans in support of Nyanza canceling Nairobi’s home ground advantage. On the terraces there was a battle of supremacy between the Nairobi schools’ cheering squads who split their allegiance. Harrison Mwendwa’s school Jamhuri high were in support of Nairobi while Secondary school’s soccer champions Lang’ata high threw their weight behind Nyanza.


“We were the underdogs in this game but you can see the results. am happy am going to South Africa and board a plane for the first time. football has made this possible and I will not disappoint” screamed the elated top scorer Timothy Otieno

The tournament whose finals was broadcast live by NTV lived to its expectation to the happiness of the organizers led by Pamela Mutua of Coca cola who was more than impressed at the success of the finals.

16 players were selected from the tournament and will represent Kenya in this year’s International copa coca cola championship to be held in South Africa. The players will also have a chance to watch the world cup and meet the best players in the world.

Emmanuel Kiprop from Central province was selected as the best goalkeeper while sensational Timothy Otieno was undoubtedly the best striker and top scorer.Nyanza’s midfielder John Olande took home the trophy of best midfielder while Hassan of Central was the best defender.
Western province doubled their cheque for being the most disciplined team of the tournament to take home Kshs.200, 000.00
