Joseph Nyaga takes on Joshua Oyoo

Joseph Nyaga’s 75th minute drive put Sofapaka through to the FKF Cup finals for the third year in a row after a 1-0 win over league defending champions Tusker at the Moi Sports Centre Kasrani on Sunday afternoon.

The win now sets Sofapaka up for a repeat of last year’s finals against Gor Mahia, set to be played at the Kasarani Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Prior to Nyaga’s goal, the game was marred by controversy in the 53rd minute after Humphrey Mieno’s ferocious freekick tore through the net with keeper George Opiyo well beaten, but the ref ruled off the goal.

Ref Thomas Ogwayo had given an indirect freekick after John Baraza was hacked down at the edge of the box. It was expected that a second player should have touched the ball before it was hit in. Sofapaka players mobbed the referee arguing it was a genuine goal but Ogwayo stood his ground even after consulting with his assistant.

Just after the restart to the ball. Tusker had the easiest of chances to move ahead after a break from the ball with four players on attack with only Duncan Ochieng to beat. However, Joshua Oyoo chose to pass the ball to Ken Wendo who was standing in an offiside position when it was best for him to go for glory himself.

Sofapaka would awaken from that disappointed and upped their attack and it yielded the Nyaga goal. Nyaga shot low to beat his former team mate George Opiyo after receiving a pass from Herritier Luvualu who had done well on the left to shake off two Tusker defenders.

Both teams were shy at goal in the first half with Kenneth Wendo making the first chgance in the 17th minute but his shot went wide. Wendo had another chance with 125 moinutes before the breather but he missed a lone header from a Luke Ochieng’ cross.

A minute to half time, John Baraza came close for Sofapaka with a beautifully taken volley after a cross from Joseph Nyaga.

Sofapaka meant business in the second half and seven minutes from the restart, Abdallah Juma had a freekick bounce off the cross bar, just a minute to Mieno’s controversial goal.
