Gor Mahia silence champions

Gor Biro Yawne yo, Gor Biro yawne yo (Gor Mahia is coming clear the way)!!!! Dominated the air waves in the beautiful chilly Nairobi Wednesday night at the Nyayo stadium, chants that have become characteristic of Gor mahia premier league matches this time against an equally chanting opposition of Sofapaka’s drum beats.
In the field under the floodlights were Gor Mahia battling it out with the big cat boys and Kenya premier league defending champions Sofapaka Fc otherwise known as Batoto ba mungu.

Seven minutes into the match and the drum beats were augmented thanks to a John Baraza goal that gave Sofapaka a forward chest against their resilient Gor mahia opponents. The champions who have been under pressure for results saw a new outfit with Wandera starting in the midfield and Harambee stars custodian Wilson Obungu warming the bench. Also missing in the squad was the fighter Edgar ochieng and Kimani. This is the latest of changes introduced in the team by the Ugandan tactician Ssimbwa who recently took over the team after the dismissal of Robert Matano.

Gor Mahia will have themselves to blame after missing numerous scoring chances in the first half thanks to the technical Sofapaka defense marshaled by James Situma which caught the Gor lads in countless offside positions to the infuriation of the later fans.

It was embarrassing though to observe more than four poor throw ins from both teams, a spectacle not anticipated in a match of such magnitude. At the same time Gor mahia appeared to be harassed by the wet ground which led to numerous unnecessary slips in the field putting to question the standard of their playing kit.

On the touchline ,the display continued to  be impressive as the fans worked themselves up to outdo each other, this time the drummers holding an upper hand over the chants and the frail Gor Mahia trumpets.

The 2nd half saw Gor mahia a rejuvenated side and in the 55th minute the self proclaimed blackberry Odhiambo hit the cross bar with the goalkeeper well beaten to the disappointment of the mammoth Gor fans including the right honorable Prime Minister Raila Odinga who is Gor mahia’s number one fan.

And like manor from heaven, in the 75th minute the referee pointed to the spot to gift Gor mahia a penalty after sofapaka keeper brought down the net bound Omondi in the box.Awilo converted the resultant penalty sending Sofapaka’s champagne bottles back to Kalekwa’s drawer.

Despite Bob Mugalia’s constant scares at the Gor Mahia’s goal mouth the match ended with shared spoils sending both teams to the drawing board in search of a winning formula.
