It didn’t last long. Only six months after leading Chelsea to the heights of European glory, the tactician behind that historical achievement, Roberto Di Matteo no longer occupies the inferno that is Chelsea’s managerial hot seat.

Predictably, based on his stature in modern football and the recent run of results that have included only two wins in eight matches across all competitions, the hammer has finally fallen on the former Chelsea player, with Roman Abramovich said to be furious for not getting a decent return of his investments.

Last night’s 3-0 humbling defeat at the hands of Juventus was the final straw for the oligarch. Failure to win the Community Shield against Man City, not forgetting the 4-1 European Super Cup spanking at the hands of the Radamel Falcao-led Atletico Madrid, did not aide Di Matteo’s case.

Rafa Benitez is the most probable option for the Blues hierarchy, since it will prove tricky for the Russian oligarch to persuade Josep Guardiola to end his sabbatical leave and join the Stamford Bridge outfit before the summer.

The former West Bromwich Albion manager who made 119 appearances for the Blues in his playing career ends his managerial stint at the Bridge having won the Champions League and the FA Cup trophies.
