Ndasaba, a mainstay and former captain of the national women’s volleyball team, Malkia Striker for over a decade from the mid-90s to the late 2000s, was a member of the squads that competed at the 1998 and 2002 FIVB Women’s World Championships, the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games in Sydney and Athens respectively as well as several African championships.
Bitok has retained Mercy Moim as captain of the squad that also features regulars Noel Murambi, Edith Wisa, Sharon Chepchumba as well as seven debutants Veronica Adhiambo, Veronica Kilabat, Emmaculate Nekesa, Magdalene Sande and Belinda Barasa.
Popularly known as “Wa-Tailor”, Gitau was admitted to the Nairobi West Hospital with head injuries sustained following a road accident on Bunyala Road as he headed home from officiating the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) league fixtures at the Nyayo National Stadium on 29 July 2022.
The tactician says that the Brazil training camp will be crucial to prepare the team for the World Championships but notes it will be hard to keep players motivated without allowances.
To clinch the award, Chepchumba beat a healthy field that included two starring performers from the just concluded Deaflympics in Brazil.
The team was scheduled to leave for Brazil this weekend, but the trip is in doubt after the Sports Ministry informed them they did not have money to finance the trip.
Kenya has been drawn against champions Canada, New Zealand and Ghana in Pool A of the women’s beach volleyball competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. Australia, who took home silver last time around, will be facing Cyprus, Trinidad and Tobago and Sri Lanka in pool B.
“I felt very happy and relieved because we have been coming number two and three many times and the last edition we were number nine. To come all the way and ensure we won was great for the team,” said Munala.
Head coach Paul Bitok says the team is expected to land in Brazil by the 20th of this month and will later on also fly to Serbia for three friendly matches.
