This year’s edition of Impala Floodlights tournament will feature a total of 22 teams, battling in three categories, ladies, universities and clubs. The University and Clubs categories will have eight teams each drawn from the Kenya Cup, Championship and Nationwide leagues, while the ladies’ category will have six teams.
The Malkia Strikers had come into this match on a high, having silenced African rivals Cameroon 3-0 on Tuesday and indeed gave everything against an Italy side who coasted to a fourth win on the trot in the pool.
“It’s tough but we’ll never take a win for granted,” Springboks captain Siya Kolisi said. “We knew they were never going to back down. We wish we could have done it (clinch the title), but just grateful to get the win in the end.”
The All Blacks victory means the Springboks will also need to secure a bonus point and beat Argentina by 40 points in the final match of the championship in Durban to take the title back to South Africa.
