Two more steps to the World Cup for U-20 girls

The dream of Kenya playing at a FIFA world Cup event is two steps away from reality after the U-20 girls managed an excellent performance to steer past the last two stages with deserved wins over Lesotho and Zambia.

Only two teams will qualify to represent the African continents at the world Cup set for Japan later in 2012 (August) and Kenya is part of the remaining eight teams seeking to book a ticket to the games.

“Our girls are capable of delivering the historic qualification. We are trying all means to ensure the team gets adequate preparation before the next two stages that are critical for our girls who have been growing and becoming better by the day.” Added Naggi.

After sailing past Zambia in the last round of qualifiers with a 5-2 goal aggregate, Kenya will next play Tunisia who out washed their North African neighbors Morocco 6-0 on Aggregate. A win for Kenya over Tunisia will draw the Starlets against the winner of the match between South Africa and Ghana after which the winner of the match will book one of the two slots to the world Cup.

Ghana humiliated Namibia 10-0 on aggregate after two rounds of matches while South Africa out washed Botswana 7-2 on aggregate.

Kenyan Coach Florence Adhiambo is confident that Kenya can prove she is a strong force in women soccer in Africa.

“Our last two rounds have proved that for real Kenya is  a sleeping giant in women soccer. We only need to improve on our structures especially at the grassroots to be able to wrestle the rest of Africa especially West Africa who have been very good in the previous matches. I believe currently I have one of the best squads in Africa and with good mental character and preparation, we are capable of causing an upset.” She said.
