Emphatic Under 20 girls hammer Zambia

The Kenya National Under 20 ladies team edged closer to the U-20 Women World Cup in Japan after hammering Zambia 4-0 in the return leg of the qualifying round match played on Saturday afternoon  at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. The girls won on a 5-2 aggregate after losing 2-1 in Zambia two weeks ago.

Sharon Bushenei, Wendy Achieng’, Neddy Atieno and Mural Auma scored to ensure Kenya’s passage to the next round. Zambia were forced to ten men after Anne Chitembe was sent off for elbowing Kenyan Captain Neddy Atieno.

The “She-polopolo’s” demise was further complicated by keeper Delly Lumbwaya’s injury. The keeper had to be stretchered off with ten minutes remaining to the end of the match after suffering a concursion . Zambia could not send in their reserve keeper as they had exhausted their substitutions.

The Kenyan girls started on a high going into attack from the first whistle. Just four minutes into the match, Sharon Busienei came close with her header going inches wide from Neddy Atieno’s cross. Mural Auma’s freekick in the 18th minute was punched away by the Zambian keeper for a fruitless corner.

The Zambian captain Kabange Mupopo was a constant threat to the Kenyan wingers with her dangerous runs on the wings. In the 35th minute her ferocious shot from the left hit the side netting with the Kenyan defenders left gaping.

Kenya finally got the much needed goal in the 38th minute through Sharon Bushenei who nut megged the Zambian keeper after a good through pass from the centre.

The goal seemed to spark more gas in the Kenyan side with increased attacks. Two shots from Bushenei and Auma were both saved by the Zambian keeper for fruitless corners.

Come the second half, the Kenyan ladies started on an extreme high with some extreme motivation. In the 52nd minute, Terry Ouko’s free kick was tipped over for a fruitless corner . Just three minutes after that, Neddy Atieno turned and shot inside the box but her shot was saved.

Kenya doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute from the spot after Bushenei was hacked down inside the box. Wendy Anne Achieng’ coolly slotted in the spot kick to double Kenya’s lead.

With Zambia now reduced to ten players, Kenya found a free fall especially at the centre of defense where the sent off Chitemba was playing in. Bad came to worse when the keeper was out injured and Sophani Banda took the gloves with no subs available.

With just a minute played on added time, Neddy Atieno tripled Kenya’s lead in emphatic fashion with a powered run from the left wing, beating two defenders and lobbing over the advancing Sophani in goal. Kenya was not yet done; Mural Auma still had her best to show off. The midfielder coolly controlled a ball before putting it over the advancing Zambian defender and releasing a powered shot into the left corner to make it a 4-0 win for the Kenyans.

They next play either Tunisia or Morocco.
