Updated on 10/02/12  |    By CONSOLATA MAKOKHA

Implausible it seems, for a player to have scored 53points in a single match. Well, it happened on the 21st of January, 2012, and this time round it was Kenya’s own on a high.

Kenyan international James Nyang’au Ontere has set the highest one-match scoring record in the Japanese V.League- Japan’s Top Volleyball League. Ontere plies his trade with Oita Mikoshi Weisse Alder. He scored 53points in the match pitting Oita Mikoshi Weisse Alder and FC Tokyo.

With such a point-score for a player, the match must have been played upto five sets, the player must have received numerous sets, several blocks and served like a fiend. The match’s set score stood at 2-3 (23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 18-20) in favor of Oita Mikoshi Weisse Alder.

According to inside-volley.com one-match top scorer article, Ontere’s record is fourth world-over, first in Japan and first for a Kenyan.

The other Kenyan featuring among the first 25 records of one-match top scorer is Philip Maiyo who scored 43points in the 2009 FIVB World Championship Qualifying in a crush between Kenya and Tunisia. Maiyo is currently playing with CVM Tomis Constata in Romania’s top league.

One-match top scorer world-over is Gavin Schmitt, Canadian playing with  Daejeon Samsung Bluefangs side in South Korea’s top volleyball league- KOVO. Having scored 57points on 24th March 2011, Gavin broke his own record by a point, scoring 58points on 2nd of February 2012 against Gumi LIG Greater in a league game.
