Loads of Ugali flour in Volleyball Queens’ cargo to Algeria

In their quest for a place in the 2012 London Olympics, the Kenyan women’s national volleyball team is taking nothing to chance; both on and off the pitch.

After an awful experience in Algiers four years ago in the Olympic Qualifiers where they almost slept hungry on a daily basis due to unfavorable Algerian menus, the Kenyan contingent will carry with them their own food. Top on the menu; Ugali!

The Kenyan team departs on Monday evening at 5:30PM for Blida Algeria where they will take part in the African Olympic qualifiers against Egypt, Algeria and Seychelles.

“The last time we were in Algeria, we were forced to go hungry for hours and when we finally got some food, it was not what we are used to. We eat Ugali, strong food that gives you energy to hit hard like a real African. In North Africa they eat Spaghettis and rice, That cannot drive our quest for a place in London. We are taking with us enough Ugali flour, milk and an assortment of Kenyan cuisine for our comfort. We want to be in London.” Said Mildred Odwako, the team libero.

Only one team will qualify to represent Africa in this year’s London Olympics and Kenya who are defending their title they last won in Nairobi in 2011 are hot favorites.

Team trainer Japheth Munala is confident the Kenyan team has the best quality in Africa and the players have all it takes to outshine their opponents.

"We have brought with us the best of Africa and we are confident of a place in the Olympics. We call on Kenyans to keep us in prayer as we head out for the heavy task”, Munala says.
