Kenyan Volleyball queens to depart on Monday

Updated on 30/01/12  |    By AMOS ABUGA

The final squad of the women volleyball team departs Nairobi on Monday 5.30pm  for Algeria where they will take part in a three day Olympic qualifying championship which kicks off on February 2 in Blida, Algeria.

The team which leaves their hotel room at 2pm is expected to leave in two different planes both taking off at 5.30pm Kenyan time -the first group traveling via Doha, Qatar and the other through via Addis Ababa to Algeria.

Speaking to michezoafrika.com the coach said this is due to the unavailability of sufficient space in one flight otherwise they were to travel in one group.

The players will have a two day rest before the championship kicks off on February 2nd . Only four teams, Egypt, Seychelles, host Algeria and Kenya will take part in the championship whose winner will represent Africa in this year’s London Olympics and the reigning Africa champions are jubilant ahead of the qualifiers confident that they stand a good chance to clinch the ticket to the Games.

“We have prepared well and the team is in good shape with high morale. We call on Kenyans to keep us in prayer as we take on the road to London.” Said setter Janet Wanja.

Due to the small number of teams participating in this year’s championship, Confederation of Africa Volleyball Federation, CAVF opted for a round robin format of play with three matches expected to take place daily.

"Am confident with the squad I have ,we were forced to drop, Kenya Prisons pairs of Judith Tarus, Lois Tarus and Noel Marambi of Kenya pipeline from the squad, they were excellent but the chances were limited and we could only carry twelve." Said head coach Gideon Chenje.

The team will return home on Sunday, February 5.
